PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Students are admitted to undergraduate programmes under faculties of Mathematics, Economics and Commerce. The duration of the under graduate programme is 6 semesters distributed in a period of 3 academic years. The odd semester will be from June to October and even semester will be from November to March. Each semester will have a minimum of 90 working days inclusive of all examinations. Each undergraduate programme has the following courses.
• Common courses
• Core courses
• Complementary courses
• Open courses

Common courses: Every undergraduate student, except those in the Language Reduced Programme (LRP) pattern, has to undergo 10 common courses (total 38 credits). The LRP offered by the college is B Com . Students in this programme need take only 6 common courses. The common courses offered by the college are courses in English and courses from a selection of three Second/Additional Languages. While English is compulsory, students can choose either Arabic, Hindi, or Malayalam as their Second/ Additional Language.

Core courses: Core courses are the courses in the major (core) subject of the degree programme chosen by the student. Core courses are offered by the parent department. The number of core courses varies from 10 to 18 including a project work.

Complementary Courses: Complementary courses cover one or two disciplines that are related to the core subject and are distributed in the first four semesters.

Open courses: The Mathematics, Economics, Commerce, and Physical Education departments offer one open course each for fifth semester students based on the core subject of the department. This course will be open to all the students in the institution except for the students of the parent department. The aim is to introduce the students to an area of study that is different from their core subject, thereby opening up new vistas of knowledge. Thus students have the opportunity to choose from four different courses according to their personal aptitude and interest.

ASSESSMENT AND EXAMINATION

Student assessment includes both internal and external assessment as per the university regulations. From 2014 admissions onwards, direct grading has been done away with. Students admitted from 2014 onwards will be assessed in each course for a total of 100 marks, 20 of which will be granted in internal assessment and 80 in external assessment. Internal assessment will be based on three criteria: attendance of the student, performance in assignment/seminar/viva, and marks secured in the internal assessment examination. External assessment will be in the form of written university examinations at the end of each semester.
